Driveshaft?

I put my 87 GMC back together this weekend. I dropped the 283 back in with a 350 short tail trans. I figured that the 700R4 was short tail thats what I was going to need for the truck since the drive shaft was going to be too long for a 350 longtail. I get it all together and I put the driveshaft in the trans and slide it back to the rearend...and clunk! I heard the driveshaft hit the floor. I measure it and I am about 3 inches short. Damn. So this morning I call a place that used to do drive shafts and they tell me they cant add to the driveshaft...but they could retube it.

Anyone else have a problem like this? Any solutions?
