Question 1972 Mystery Door Holes

Hello all,

My apologies if this comes across as a stupid question to the experts here, but I need some words of wisdom.

There are holes in the top steel section of the interior of the doors on a '72 Chevy Pick-up, just below the vent window.

What are these holes for?
What should be in them (cap/trim?)?
Are these only on '72's?

There is a picture that shows the hole in question here - http://classiccars.com/Uploads/Classifieds/6004.jpg

Thanks,
Allan
