Question Heat Sink

When re-wiring my 69 I found a second solonoid (sp?) bolted on the undercarriage. . . It was a Ford solonoid and was parrelled wired. I got one reply from a previous post and it was suggested that it was due to heat sink on the starter. . . . Make sense - as far as "working" goes - but why wouldn't someone just put a heat shield on? JPeg sells one. Just curious. I'm trying to decide if I should put it (2nd solonoid) back on or buy a heat shield. Truth be told; my other BB never had the problems and the starter was in the exact same position. Any help or comments would be appriciated guys. Thanks
Jerry
