How do you tell when a rebuild is needed.

How do you tell when a transmission needs to be rebuilt?? I have a TH400 that im puttin in my truck. The vehicle i took it out of the tranny felt fine. I do need a different torque converter on it, (new cam on new motor) but what do i check inside the trans>???

i do have a book on its way on how to rebuild a TH400, but i was hoping i could get some advice.. Impatient on the book. ahah
