Fuel gage troubleshooting

A couple of times in the past month fuel gage will go from reading correctly to needle going to 1/4 tank. It will stay like that for a few days then all of a sudden go to reading whats really in the tank. Sending unit was replaced with new AC part about 10 years ago. I'm thinking maybe sending unit going bad, gage itself, bad wire. Anything I might be overlooking. Thanks.
