One part left over..... ugh!

Put in new inner and outter bearings on the front wheel, then new disk pads ('72) - As I was putting the caliper back on, I had to keep the rear shoe "up" so that it's ears would rest on the through bolts that hold the caliper in place. No biggee once I figured out what needed to be done. When it was all done, I looked down and saw this spring on the ground! I am pretty sure it holds the inner pad in place... Just not sure how. Both my manuals make mention of it but NO PICS! Any help would be greatly appreciated!
