If you do run the shorter tires, 1st high might be worth a try. It usually takes at least a mild big block to tear out the coupler. Keep an eye out for a mid 80's 465/205 combo- they don't run a coupler. Super stout. Put a button clutch & 1-1/4" input shaft in & you should be good to about 700HP. But then you will need a 60 in the front...
It was easier on parts back when they ran mechanical sleds. Modern drag race sleds with grouser pans are hard on parts. It's all for fun, and worth every penny
