Students: Basic Chemistry class ala Truck Forum

Not to be a smart*ss, and I'm not a chemist, but one of the classes I DIDN'T sleep thru was high school chemistry. Because it was interesting, the way the guy taught it. Our teacher was into practical stuff - not just all about memorizing formulas. He taught about WHY stuff worked the way it does. So here goes:

Oven cleaner = "lye" --- Potassium or Sodium Hydroxide

That's why it's kinda-sorta bad for the kids, the dogs, grass, concrete & the environment in general. And also why it kinda itches or burns when it gets on your skin (it's a chemical burn -- eating it up & dissolving it .....). Real bad for your eyes, etc. That's why the warning labels on the cans are pretty serious-sounding.

Lye + grease or oil + heat, & reaction time = "soap"

(that's how grandma made lye-soap -- hog lard + lye & boil it & stir it then let what came to the top of the kettle cool & harden -- poof: gotchyer not so instant, & not so mild on the skin soap).

That's how soap is made, still today. They just add a bunch of other cr*p to it to make it smell nice & be milder on your skin.

Yep - the reaction becomes more complete, the longer time it sits.

& Yep again, the hotter it is, the faster the reaction goes --- 10 degrees centigrade increase doubles the reaction speed.
