Trimming coil springs with spindles?

I have just started working on my newest 1984 SWB and am wanting to lower it 3/5. I know I want to use a 5" flip kit with the factory light duty springs, but am very concerned about using 3" spindles...

This truck was originally purchased by my dad and will never be for sale (we're the first and ninth owners) so I really don't want to cut up the control arms for needed wheel clearance (planning on 8" and 10" Rally wheels...) with the 3" spindles.

I have also heard horror stories about trying to align a truck with lower control arms, plus I don't really care for the way they look...

If I go with a 2.5" spindle from Summit Racing or Western Chassis, how much will I have to trim from the factory springs to make up the last .5" of drop? Is there a recommended formula for number of coils removed vs. amount of drop?
