Weird whinning noise from engine

Recently my truck with a 350 has been acting up and giving me issues. About a week ago I started getting this weird whinning noise coming from the engine compartment but I was unable to pin point it because there is just to much noise going on in there from the fan and exhaust. A few days later the alternator went out and I was almost excited because I was hoping the old one was making the noise, its not the alternator. After further inspection it sounds like its coming from the rearish of the motor but I dont know what I should be lookin for. Also sometimes if the rpms drop below 1000 it dies but if I give it gas quick enough she wakes right back up.
