GM350CID/290HP question

I was just wondering if anyone that has a 350/290 is on the same situation. You turn on the truck, but u have to give it a little gas, and it starts right away, almost instantaneous, but if u dont give it gas on the first atempt, it takes a while to start and then u have to kinda like prime the carb with the throttle.

I bought a regular mechanical fuel pump, like the Carter design, i have a GM Racing Mech pump but i cant put it in, i will have to grind the right side engine cross member so the fitting can go in there. Does this starting problem is due to the pump not having enough PSI for 350 engines?

Thanks.
