Do I need this pink wire on the solenoid?

I think I already know the answer to this, and is probably a dumb question but...

I converted over to HEI today and instead of running a new 12 gauge wire, I used the one off of the carb solenoid.. what does that solenoid do? I am going to hook it back up, but it sure seemed to run just fine without it.
