Crap...I broke my engine.

OK guys, this morning I was installing the new quadrajet I modified and over hauled on the '80. Everything was going great it fired right up and idled cold after 3 or 4 cranks. So I started to adjust the fast idle cam and then I goosed the throttle so it would step down. When I did that, I heard a clatter and white smoke starting pouring out of the pass. side exhaust. Now it has a contstant knock and believe I may have dropped something in the intake when I was putting the new carb on and it made it's way to one of the cylinders. I have not pulled anything apart because I was so pissed I had to take a break.

My question to you guys: Should I pull it apart and replace the components I destroyed (mind you the engine is already tired) or should I go with a crate motor?

Thanks. Here is a pic of the quadrajet I modified (on the inside that is)...
