Question Dirty Gas Tank Question

I have a 67 C20 and its been running a little rough. I decided to adjust the carb and change the fuel filter...well the fuel filter had so much dirt (which I think is rust from the tank) in it that I was surprised the carb even got fuel. I noticed the PO put a new fuel pump on it and was wondering is there any way to clean out the gas tank? Will all that dirt mess up my fuel pump? or should I just keep changing fuel filters until it cleans itself out? Any help would be great.
