396 in my stepper

My 69 stepper has a 250 6cyl in it. Since the 69 3/4 isnt going to be fixed do to the cab is shot...I am yanking the motor and trans out. I want to slap the 396 in the stepper now. I noticed the shifters are not in the same place as the other. I took the hump out of the 3/4 already since I was assessing the rust damage. since I have never done a 6 to 8 swap....tell me what I getting myself into?

69 stepper shifter.

69 3/4 shifter

I notice the 3/4 sits further up towards the dash. The stepper shifter sits in the middle of the hump.

Is it possible to set the 396 in the 250 position?
