Heater Hose Help

Hoping for opinions here. I just installled an Edelbrock Performer Air Gap on my small block and I am not sure how i want to run the heater hoses. Is there a preferred way? I spent an hour today looking at some of the rides posted here and it seems like most have a line to the thermostat area (#3,#5) with another going to the water pump (#6) or the radiator. I also have a port in the front of the thermostat (#4) and two in the back (#1, #2) - can these be used? If #1 and #2 are plugged, will it affect the cooling of the rear of the engine? Thanks.
