Seal between Firewall and Blower Motor

I pulled my heater core out today, replaced it then replaced (or attempted to) all the seals. Well when I went to put the blower motor seal in, it doesnt fit so well.

Does anyone know if the flat part faces the firewall or the blower?

The PICTURE on the instruction makes it look like the flat part goes against firewall but when you tighten everything up it makes the flat part flare out and look kind of weird.

Anyone do this and know what Im talking about???

THANKS!
