guage cluster question

truck itself has lots of miles but who cares most people are concerned about the motor only. My question is since i have done lots of work to my 84 swb including a brand new motor I have taken the gauge cluster and tried to reset it to all 00000s' but didnt work. Apparently, I broke a little white paper tab in the back thats probably why it doesnt work anymore. Any of you guys know how to do this successfully?
