console repairs

I have been collecting consoles and I have been taking parts from them and putting all the good pieces together to make good ones.Over the years I now have about 10 that are the left overs that have cracks and chips.I would like to know from someone who has restored a few of these the best way to repair them.Should I use fiberglass or some type of epoxy? What is the best method of removing the old paint?I know we have a pro at refurbishing these lurking here somewhere.I need a little schooling on doing things the right way before I start.Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
