New and Need Majore Chevy 101 help!

First off, Great site!!! I love these classic trucks. I need some serious help.

Im looking to buy a 1972 Long bed Chevy truck

Stats:
350 Motor - not original
4.10 Rear Gear
Long Bed
Runs on 93 octane
Muncie 4 speed
Disc brakes up front
Drum brakes on back
Painted green 6 years

The guy wants $4,500. My story is I would like a short bed. How hard it is to convert the long to short? I see you have to cut and weld (Way out of my leauge) Also is that a fair price? I need the truck for daily use as well. Any info would be great and thanks!!!
