Unhappy Sticky Goo on steering wheel... Need help

Ok so I found a Z28 steering wheel at the swap meet the other day, The darn thing is Nasty sticky Ive tried simple green, dawn dish soap, and im about to try laquer thinner here real soon, the only thing stopping me from using thinner is im affarid it will eat more than the sticky goo. Has anyone had this problem and if so how did u clean the thing up?
