MSD Sreetfire HEI.. WOW! What a difference!
When I got this truck a year ago, I quickly swapped in an OEM HEI out of a 3rd gen Blazer. I thought it ran OK, it stumbled here and there, and "popped" occasionally under throttle, and 2nd gear was missing in the upper RPM's and it shifted late into 3rd.. My timing was set to 8 BTDC
Well all that changed when I put in the streetfire HEI, I know it is not a top of the line HEI, but I didn't want to spend 300 on one either, I think I paid 150 for this. I put it in, set initial timing to 11 (running 89 octane), and turned the vac advance adjustment screw out exactly 9 turns. Took it for a ride and WOW! Night and day! Throttle response is so much improved, it revs so much smoother, it doesn't miss in the upper rpm's, and it shifts now like butter! with a little kick of course. I've had this HEI laying around for a while, and I was going to return it but I lost the receipt, but now I am sure glad I kept it! Really woke this old 350 up! I have no idea how to set the vac advance, maybe I got lucky with he 9 turns because it runs amazing. Anyone running one of these adjustable vac advances can give me some tips?
