Stuck spindle removal

I have a front axle form a 72 K5 that I am dis-assembling for spare parts (axle was junk). Anyway, I have the hubs and rotors off, the splash guard off. I can't get the spindle to come loose. My book says to smack it with a plastic hammer, but I think it's just too tight or rusted in to pop out.

Any ideas on how to get the spindle out of the knuckle without ruining anything?

Once the spindle is off, the axle is supposed to pull through the knuckle, right? I've never pulled one of these apart before. I'm kind of practicing with this one before I do the u-joints and ball joints on my jimmy.
