I hate heaters

So before I start working on my truck tomorrow to fix the heater, I start working on my other truck. I accidentally put a hole in the heater box in the engine compartment. There was an AC piece of something screwed to it and I got caught on it on my down and it tore a hole in the black box.

Is it water tight in there or can I just patch it up without worrying about anything leaking? I have the piece and I think that with the right stuff, I could make it water tight. I am assuming that this thing holds water but I don't know that for sure, I know that it seems to be sealed all of the way around.

Thanks for the help guys.
