Fuel Gauge

My fuel gauge stopped working this past weekend. I checked the connection on the sending unit, and when I took the connection off the sending unit my fuel gauge jumped all the way from empty to extremely full. When I pluged it back in it went right back to empty. Does this mean that I need a new sending unit? Mine is only about 2 years old.
