HELP! Leaky water pump or hose or something

Well sh!t! After wrestling with my new short water pump all day, I got it in but can't get it to stop leaking. I even got a new lower hose. The pump is from a Corvette, it was all Autozone had that would fit. The only thing I can think of is that the pump came with a very short rod, the same width and about half the length of the bolts used for the pump. Was this necessary to put in the pump somewhere? It looked like the bolt would seal the hole but h3ll if I know. Can anyone help out? It leaks like a sieve and I need to get it on the road and this is all I lack. Do I need to pull the pump and stick this piece back in somewhere? Any help would be MUCH appreciated!

Thanks!
Jason
