Disc brake dust covers?

I am wondering if they are worth the trouble. My new spindles are not drilled for them, but there are bosses where the holes should be. I don't have a problem with drilling and tapping holes, I do it all the time. But not in the parts that keep me from losing control and smashing into a school bus.

What size bolts would they normally take? I'm thinking like 1/4 20 or so. And would it be cast iron? Maybe self-tapping screws?
