Installing intake and carb, what can go?

There are quite a few htings on the stock intake that appear as though they will not be needed with the new carb im installing. On the passenger side there is a little metal box with a rod and coil in it, it does not go in the motor but appears to be a coil that is effected with heat? what does it do? obvious to me it is not needed.
What else is not needed?

What does everyone do with the hoses that go into the stock air cleaner. Such as the one from the drivers side manifold, and I think one other somewhere.

Also can the factory valve covers take a different oil filler set up to get rid of that tall filler?
