Tuned up "Bob"
Alrighty...I got my '87 5.7L TBI GMC (aka Bob...per my youngest daughter) tuned up today. I thought this was going to be the typical tune-up with new plugs, wires, cap, rotor button...NOPER. I made it to installing the new rotor cap when things started coming down around me. The last person to replace the rotor cap obviously overtightened the rear most cap screw and broke it off in the distributor. After several failed attempts to remove the screw with the distributor still in the truck I came to the conclusion that it wasn't going to happen. So I pulled out the distributor and quickly removed the remnants of the old screw, confirmed that the new cap would screw back onto the distributor (long story, but this has actually happened to me before and I skipped this step and had to pull the distributor back out to clean the threads) and then realized that the distributor gasket was missing and I may have found my minor oil leak . I replaced the gasket (another run to the parts store), installed the distributor with minimal issue and got all of the plug wires ran. I unplugged the tan wire w/ the black stripe under the brake booster, shot the timing which was pretty bad off, but I brought it up to 0 degrees (per the decal on the core support). Disconnected the battery (to clear any possible trouble codes), plugged the tan wire back up, cleaned up my tools and finally reconnected the battery and Vvvrrrooomm! Bob cranked right up, after a mere 4 1/2 tune up .
I went ahead and changed the oil while I was at it and the only issue I had was that the drain plug gasket was dry rotted, but I anticipated this and had a new magnetic plug and gasket on hand. Oh yeah, I also had to replace the TPS plug because Bob was throwing a TPS code because the original plug was broken into about 24 pieces. That took another 45 minutes. So, all told, I climbed in and out from under the hood of that truck about 4 million times today and only burned myself once, 2 cuts, and one minor bump on the head. I love Bob |
