Another stupid question about back spacing

I bought a set of wheels for my c-10 the guy said the were 5x5 low and behold their 5x135. they are 18x8" and they have a 5.5 backspace and I am thinking about doing adapters. I found billet adapters on line that are 1.25" thick will this work or is this going to be too much. My truck is a 72 thats bagged and bodied.
