Tremec 3550 5 speed swap into '62 X-frame - crossmember?
I'm looking at some point to swap in a Tremec 3550 (older version of TKO) into my 62 GMC panel truck, but am looking for options with my trans cross member. I figured I'd just have to mock it up with new bellhousing and engine mounts, and fabricate a crossmember, but I wondered if any aftermarket crossmembers were available, or if I could get an auto trans crossmember for an X-frame and move it's location front or rear and just go with that?
I was wondering if the height of the factory auto trans x-frame crossmember would be correct for my application? I figure ultimately I might just be best off fabbing up my own out of maybe some 2x3 box steel and some C-channel or 2X3 angle steel stock. That way I could get the proper driveline angle. As is, my dana 44 rear's pinion angle seems to be pointed uphill a bit towards the front, and I know with the Tremec's, esp. the older ones, the driveline angle is very imperative to have them parallel, as well as bellhousing to crankshaft centerline runout. Any opinions or experiences would be helpful. Thanks, Chuck
