Alternator has me frazzled

I recently noticed my GEN light staying on all the time when my truck was running. I reasoned it would be a good time to just replace the alternator with an internally regulated one. I followed the instruction in the FAQ section. I have 14 volts at the battery when the truck is idling, but the light stays on. I reversed the wires just to be sure...light stays on, but 12 volts at battery.

I'm guessing I had the wiring part right. What will cause the GEN light to stay on?

This is on a 250 six in a 66 C10 with warning lights rather than gauges.

The truck was his and he sure as heck wouldn't understand why I took a perfectly good truck and tore it down!
