Radiator Shroud from the fan distance

Hey Guys,
Just a easy question I hope.
My fan blades sit back about 3-4 inches back from the shroud, is this correct or normal?
It was a 6 Cyl and is now a 350, so does the 350 sit back further?, it just seems like it should be closer, if nothing else for safety because the fan blades are just sitting out there.
I need a new shroud anyway and was thinking of getting an AC shroud
(I have no AC) because the opening is longer but a guy at Carlisle said it would not bolt up right. There is currently a homemade piece of bent sheet metal riveted to the top of the shroud which looks like crap as well.
The truck runs cool so that is not a problem
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks
