For what it's worth, I can confirm that D44 rears were at least available back in 67-68. I had a 68 2wd that originally had an inline 6 and 3 on the tree. I was the third owner but I knew the first 2 from my home town, the axle was original. I personally changed the 3.90 gears out to some 3.07s, then back to the 3.90s. It was 6 lug swb with coil springs. I'm pretty sure 68 was the last year for that.
