Drive Shaft Question

'71 C20 LWB

When I removed my drive shaft to replace the carrier bearing assembly I found 2 spacers between the frame mount and the U-shaped bearing assembly. Total spacing was about 3/4-inch. They are clearly home-made shims and when installed they would move the drive shaft down.

Any idea why those spacers would be there?

Should I put them back in?

Thanks in advance.
