Captain,

I am a mechanical guy myself but...
I can certify that if you hook the LED up to 12 volts it will light briefly, then smoke will come out of it, and it will light no more.

The LED's will have a specified current of around 10 milliamps. So the resistor needed to keep the current at 10 milliamps when connected to 12 volts is. R=V/I, or 1200 ohms in this example. At least I think that is how it works. The LED's are only $1.50 from Mouser.
