fuel pump install?

Is it possible to put the fuel pump in wrong on a 250 strt 6?

I aint gettin no gas out of the pump.

I take the pump off and cover the outlet end end with my finger and pump on the lever and it builds up air pressure, so I figure it's good. Then I put it back on and nothing.

The pump was working fine when I took it off two years ago and put it on a shelf and then put it back on and now it aint working. Unless I'm puttin it in wrong.

I know on some engines if you don't get the dog leg in right on the cam lobe it will not work, but from what I can tell, you can't mess up when installing the pump on a six.

Could the pump be bad... even if it build pressure when I pump it by hand? Maybe I'm pushing it farther than the cam and it's worn out or something?

Suggestions??
