Gas gauge, tank, straps

After a month of ownership, I finally got a chance to put some miles on my '70 last week. I originally thought the gauge worked. Now I realize it indicates something, not exactly sure what. While being confused at the gas station as to how much gas was going in the tank, I looked more closely underneath to make sure it wasn't a larger than standard tank. It is not, but looks decent and doesn't leak. But the straps look pretty bad. Years ago I put one of those plastic tanks in my '72 when they first came out. The steel repros weren't available yet. I didn't like how the tank fit, and I really hated the straps. They basically didn't work. Where are we nowadays on all this? I particularly need new straps, but if they aren't better than they were 8-9 years ago I'll figure out something on my own. Thanks.
