Fuel tank in the bed?

I seem to recall a couple folks had mounted their in-cab tanks in the bed, I'm wondering the feasibility of this for a temporary relocation. I have a need for in-cab storage but am not ready to drop $250 to move the tank all the way to the rear yet (couple months). Would this work, or would it be better for me to pick up a 10gallon or so portable marine tank and secure it back there for now. I only drive a couple times a week and usually not too far, so 10 would cover me fine for now. Actually, is that even legal?
