How'd water get in here?

I'm updating from drums to discs from the 98-02 camaro. Found out that they will bolt on to my 10 bolt rearend. Found a good deal on a set on Ebay & got them in yesterday and started disassembly of the rearend to remove the axles. When I removed the differential cover I was shocked to find that the oil was a thick sludge mixed with water! Any ideas where that came from?
