250 timing issue

trying to get this thing running right. If the timing is not 50* advanced the truck will barely stay running. Could someone have put the gears on wrong? The engine is out of an Olds but is a Chevy 250. I just replaced the intergral head with a regular one and it was doing this befor the swap too.
