Emergency brake cable question

My truck has a later model Chevy 12-bolt rear with stock drums. The cables have been cut but mostly still there. On the truck, the handle, front cable, and everything back to where the individual rear cables attach is all there. I want to buy new rear cables but my question is, did the original style 57 cables hook into the brake lever inside the drum like the later ones do? If I buy replacement cables for my 57 will they work with the later rear brakes without any changes?
I bought a re-pop 57 service manual but the pictures are so dark I can't really see this part, and I don't have access to an original 57 rear axle to look at.
