A/C & Heater control cables

I finally installed a NOS A/C heater control unit replacing a not so good repop. Much better quality. I played with the repop cables for quite a while and can not get them to operate properly, not even close. I swapped cables positions several times between the levers and still no luck. I have never played with these types of cables before. Any advise would be appriciated. (I do have the assembly manual showing the correct position and location of the cables). Maybe it's a matter of getting OEM cables? Thanks.
