I think the Highander model was a GM thing designed to sway people towards a GM truck. You have to remember that in '72, the horsepower race was over. Horsepower ratings became Net ratings, in comparison to SAE ratings....and they were lower. Dodge had just introduced a new body style pickup and they had an extended cab model (Club Cab) that neither Ford nor GM had except through the aftermarket.

So,the Highlanders were a trim package that the factory created to dress up the old girl, just a touch. It was a special price incentive and while other options were available on it, it had a few specific items (upholstery and wheel covers) to create a touch of difference from the plain-Jane bottom line trucks.

I say all this from my memories of the day.
