location of the shifter arm from tranny?

put on a van tilt column, and can't seem to remember which way the shifter arm goes back on the "tab",of the steering column.to be more specific.....on an automatic tranny column shifted, the arm extends to the shifter tab to the back side of the tab or in front of the tab.back.... meaning the firewall side,front..... meaning the radiator side.i'm getting a little bindage when i go from one shft location to another and am thinking that the binding may be happening at this spot....it is at a little bit of an odd angle if you remember right.i was thinking also of putting a small crescent wrench on the tab (on the thin diameter)and twisting the tab to join at a better angle w/ the shifter linkage arm.any one know what the he!! i'm babbling about,or done this to solve this prob.??
