Removing chrome finish from plastic parts.

There was a question posted in a recent build thread. I can't the thread now, but the question was how to remove the chrome finish that is applied to plastic parts.
My experience has been with scale plastic models and I use Liquid Plumber. It takes soaking for 24 hours or so and leaves the electro palted finish on the plastic part. The electro plated finish is a very smooth gloss finish. If you wanted to paint you would need to scuff this up with a fine sand paper first.

Any other suggestions?
