Thermostatic Air Cleaner - Keep or Trash

My 1971 C-20 came with many missing parts. The air cleaner was one of them. I went down to the local wrecker and he did not have one with a Thermac and PCV hook up on the right side.

When I look at most car shows, bright chrome replacement cleaner blind you as you gaze at the engine compartment. These units look pretty and maximize available air but do nothing to circulate warm air.

My questions are:
  1. Do these thermastatic units work?
  2. Do you have them on you carburetor?
