Anyone convert 3-on-tree shifter to work an automatic?

Just a random idea I had lastnight while tearing apart my 51...
I was thinking of keeping the 3 on a tree shift lever, and connecting it to the auto.
Anyone convert 3-on-tree shifter to work an automatic?

I figured a couple ways to do it. first was a simple cable to one of the arms.. and lockout the "pull towards you"..
then i got a second idea of using both arms, but have the shift pattern be:

shifter towards you all up is in park, drop once is R, drop again its in N and it falls forward (the old N as well).. then continue down for OD, D, 2, 1

anyone ever attempt something like this before? i know its alot of work for nothing, but something about the old column with the small rod shifter on top appeals to me.. so simple and functional looking... id like to keep it. even though im running a modern automatic drivetrain.
