Need help with tilt column parts

I picked up a nice tilt column and it needed a couple parts replaced like the turn signal switch and the spring that keeps the shifter from flopping around. I did some research and discovered the spring was the same for several years. The cheapest I could find online was around $18.00 plus shipping. I went to the local Chevy dealership to check the price and their system only went back to 73 (my truck is a 72 GMC). Me, thinking they were the same for several years went ahead and ordered it. Saved over $10.00 ordering it from the dealership too!

Anyway, here is my question...I ordered part number 7812853. Is it the right spring? the reason I am asking is because it seems about 2 coils too long. I can get it in my column and put the shifter back in and but then I can't pull the shifter forward enough to get it out of park. If I compare the new spring to the old, it also seems about 2 coils too long although my old spring was broke into 3 pieces.

Any help would be appreciated.
