Slammed on brakes, rear spun around.

Hi guys,

So educate me a little bit on the correct driving practice of our trucks. Today, the light I was approaching turned red, I couldn't make it, so I slammed on the brakes, the whole rear of the truck spun around and I did a 180! So, what did I do wrong? What is the correct way to stop in the event of an emergency?
